Grape Varieties of the Mosel Region

By far the most important grape variety in the Mosel is Riesling, which accounts for around 60% of the region’s total vineyard area. No other region produces such a wide spectrum of Riesling styles: from bone-dry and crystal-clear to off-dry and lusciously sweet with outstanding ageing potential.

Other varieties grown in smaller quantities include Elbling – one of Germany’s oldest grape varieties – as well as Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir and a few additional grapes.

The Mosel is internationally famous for its wines with residual sweetness, offering outstanding value for money.

How are off-dry and sweet wines made?

White wines with residual sugar retain a noticeable yet harmonious sweetness that adds richness and fruitiness. This sweetness occurs when fermentation is stopped early – for example through cooling or sulphur addition. The finest sweet wines are made from late-harvested or botrytised grapes, where noble rot (Botrytis cinerea) reduces the water content of the berries and concentrates sugar and aromas.

Mosel Wine Region: Facts & Figures

With around 8,440 hectares of vineyards, the Mosel is one of Germany’s best-known and most historic wine regions. Viticulture stretches along the rivers Mosel, Saar and Ruwer and is shaped by extremely steep vineyard sites – including legendary names such as Bernkasteler Doctor, Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Ürziger Würzgarten. Slopes with an incline of more than 30% are classified as steep sites and are mostly worked by hand – a spectacular testament to the demanding craft of Mosel winemaking.
