The grapes were harvested and careful sorted by hand, with wild yeasts kick-starting spontaneous fermentation, as is de rigueur. The wine then spent 12 months in large old Fuder (oak casks). A prolonged time on the gross lees added depth, creaminess and complexity without masking the pure Riesling fruit and its inherent terroir-driven minerality.
A ripe but elegant Riesling with aromas ranging from fresh to candied fruit (peach, ripe apple, citrus), honey, cracked stone, and fine herbs. The palate is assertive and salty, with a creamy texture, vibrant acidity and a long, spicy finish. This characterful Grosses Gewächs has impressive depth and finesse and is at the perfect stage of maturity.
Bernkasteler Lay is one of the most prestigious vineyards on the Mittelmosel. Overlooking the old town of Bernkastel, this steep, south-west-facing slope benefits from the warmth of the river and the distinctive blue Devonian slate that lends depth, minerality and a fine, savoury character. The vineyard yields elegant, assertive Rieslings that show clear fruit expression, slate-inflected finesse and great longevity.
