Instead of resorting to copious amounts of chemical fertiliser, Weingut Dr. Loosen only work their soils using low quantities of organic manure. And more than anything else, they favour a gentle, more old-school form of winemaking that gives their wines enough time to develop their inner balance and pedigree, fermenting them with wild yeasts whenever possible and affording them a long period of maturation on the fine lees.
This is an intense vintage of considerable power and aromatic depth. Nose of ripe citrus, yellow fruit and exotic fruit alongside tea and herbal aromas. Dense and creamy on the palate, with ripe yellow fruit and vibrant acidity. A beautifully coherent, ultra-refined Grosses Gewächs.
Erdener Treppchen – bordering Erdener Prälat directly to the east – is so steep that vineyard workers built a stone staircase into the hillside centuries ago so that they could access the vines more easily. This south-to-south-west-facing slope has ferrous red slate soil, yielding rich, racy, complex Rieslings that have an intense mineral aftertaste.
