A great wine is not made – it grows in the vineyard, says Achim von Oettinger, who uses only the best hand-picked grapes for this wine. The juice goes into stainless steel vats, where it ferments and ages. Achim takes a minimalist approach, shepherding the wine with as little intervention, but as carefully, as possible. The result is a fully fermented, bone-dry Riesling that speaks clearly of its origin.
Compact and slightly reductive at first, with notes of citrus, yellow nectarine, crushed stone and delicate herbs. On the palate, taut, bone-dry and uncompromisingly pure, supported by juicy acidity, pronounced saline minerality, abundant extract, concentration and depth. Delicate, long finish.
The Hohenrain grand cru covers 6.65 hectares and faces south-west. Loess-loam soil on a 15% gradient.
