Hand-picked and hand-selected grapes. Gentle pressing followed by fermentation in oak casks (partially with wild yeasts). Subsequent maturation on the fine lees through the winter until bottling in the spring.
On the nose, the 2025 Halgans shows ripe yellow fruit, peach, lime, fine herbal notes and cracked stone. Juicy on entry, with fine acidity, a pleasing, generous mid-palate, saline minerality and lots of tension. Elegant and already wonderfully open at this early stage, with a long, precise finish.
Halgans is the new name for the bottling previously called 'Halenberg trocken', and the local term for a species of crane – a pointed reference to Halenberg's special microclimate. Strong thermal winds blow through the vineyard – warm air currents that rise up the steep slope (gradient of up to 70 degrees) from the valley below. As a result, the grapes are smaller and develop an especially exquisite aroma. The predominant soils on this south-facing incline consist of slate and quartzite.
