Hand-picked and hand-selected grapes. Gentle pressing followed by fermentation in oak casks (partially with wild yeasts). Subsequent maturation on the fine lees through the winter until bottling in the spring.
This year's Halgans is compact, dark and very much terroir-driven. Ripe acidity lends great complexity and delicacy. A Riesling with fine phenolic character, superb structure, and yellow-fruit and exotic notes.
Halgans is the new name for the bottling previously called 'Halenberg trocken', and the local term for a species of crane – a pointed reference to Halenberg's special microclimate. Strong thermal winds blow through the vineyard – warm air currents that rise up the steep slope (gradient of up to 70 degrees) from the valley below. As a result, the grapes are smaller and develop an especially exquisite aroma. The predominant soils on this south-facing incline consist of slate and quartzite.
