Hand-picked and hand-selected grapes (maximum yield of 40 hectolitres per hectare). Gentle pressing followed by slow wild-yeast fermentation for several weeks in temperature-controlled stainless steel. Subsequent maturation on the lees until just before bottling, to add complexity and body.
Firm and chalky at first, then notes of pear, quince, juniper and quartzite. Powerful and pure, with beautiful structure and substance.
Saumagen is one of the most famous Riesling vineyards in the world. The terroir is a spectacular mixture of terra fusca (brown limestone clay) in the topsoil and solid limestone rock in the subsoil. The vineyard is located at the foot of the Haardt, the mountain range running parallel to the Rhine on the eastern edge of the Palatinate Forest, at an altitude of between 160 and 200 metres above sea level. The south-eastern slope benefits from intense sunlight.
