Bündner Herrschaft (Graubünden)

Vines against a mountain backdrop in autumn

Innovative winemakers have propelled the Bündner Herrschaft wine region to the forefront of Swiss viticulture. The reputation of their outstanding quality wine – mainly Spätburgunder – reaches far beyond Switzerland’s borders.

The Bündner Herrschaft lies in the northernmost part of the canton of Graubünden, stretching through the Chur Rhine Valley from Fläsch to Malans. Thanks to the warm Föhn winds, it is one of the hottest areas in German-speaking Switzerland. These warm conditions speed up ripening and concentrate the berries on the vine. The calcareous slate soils provide the perfect foundation for cultivating Pinot Noir.

Pinot Noir – the undisputed leader

Wines from the Bündner Herrschaft are wonderfully diverse. Across just 420 hectares, more than 40 different grape varieties are grown. Despite this impressive range, Pinot Noir clearly dominates, covering around 75% of all plantings. Among white wine varieties, Müller-Thurgau (also known as Riesling x Silvaner) is the most widely cultivated.

Highly sought-after quality wines

The winemakers of the Bündner Herrschaft know how to make the most of what nature provides. With sustainable vineyard practices and intentionally low yields, they harvest grapes of exceptional quality. By marrying technical innovation with traditional winemaking methods, they craft wines that not only deliver impressive flavour but are also remarkably gentle thanks to their purity and naturally low acidity.
