Weingut Grans-Fassian

Weingut Grans-Fassian Catherina Grans, Weingut Grans-Fassian

Weingut Grans-Fassian in Leiwen has been in family ownership for almost 400 years. The estate produces wines from prime vineyards on the Mosel and focuses on dry single-vineyard bottlings in particular. Its wines are elegant and pure, with fascinating minerality.

Established in 1624 by the Grans and Fassian families, Weingut Grans Fassian is based in Leiwen on one of the most picturesque, expansive bends of the Mosel, where the steep slate vineyards are iconic. From its early beginnings, the winery has constantly striven to produce wines of the highest quality.

A family winery spanning 13 generations

Gerhard Grans took over the winery from his father in 1982, expanding the estate’s four hectares to holdings that now total 12 hectares, of which Riesling accounts for 90%. Thanks to his tireless quest for greater precision and finesse, the property soon attracted international attention and received numerous accolades. Gerhard’s daughter Catherina joined the business in 2013 and ultimately became the 13th generation of the family to represent the winery when she took over the reins in 2017.

Focus on high-end dry wines

Besides taking meticulous care of the vineyards and carrying out stringent selection at harvest, Catherina believes that a gentle approach is essential to winemaking – with slow fermentation at lower temperatures, a long period of ageing on the lees, and the use of both stainless steel vats and oak casks. This results in crystalline wines that exhibit a clear sense of place. High-end dry wines account for 80% of the winery portfolio.

“Exceptional vineyards are key to world-class wines”

Moselle

The steep banks of the Mosel are home to mineral-driven, elegant wines. Riesling, sometimes referred to as the king (or queen) of white wines, is the most important grape along the German stretch of the Mosel Valley, accounting for over 5,300 hectares under vine. This makes the Mosel wine region the largest producer of Riesling worldwide.
